To all my American friends and my American daughter…

Happy 4th of July!

The American Anthem

I’ve always loved the American Anthem – The Star-Spangled Banner.

When we lived in the US I loved hearing my kids sing it. We were part of a homeschool academy in California for a while, where they and other homeschool kids would get together to take group classes in various subjects (in addition to what they did at home).

In those classes they would sing the American Anthem and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. My kids would practice in the morning before school to be sure they had it right!

At the end of this post I will share a wonderful video of the American Anthem – a verse of it you don’t hear so often!

A Rich and Godly History

I took a few American History courses while I lived in the US. I wanted to know more about the country.

One course was on the constitution and all the people who contributed to it. I studied who some of the founding fathers were, what the early presidents were like and so forth.

I firmly believe that the United States of America became such a powerful force in the world, in great part, because they were a humble people, knowing and living out the fact that God was in charge. They were mindful of their responsibility to obey Him and run the country the way He would want it run.

Today, I must admit that I am saddened by the way things have changed.

The nation and its leaders (not everyone but many) have turned their back on the God who prospered them.

They’ve cut God out of their legislation. Out of their education. Out of their homes.

Even, sadly, out of many churches.

Still the God of Israel too

People also forget that this same God has a special relationship with Israel. That He continues to watch over and use the nation of Israel in ways that display His power and glory.

There’s every reason to believe that He still blesses those who bless Israel. And still curses those who curse them.

I recently read a thought-provoking book called As America Has Done to Israel.

It’s a worthwhile read. It so beautifully outlines how God has blessed America and prospered her whenever she has blessed Israel and the Jewish people. But it also makes the case that God is punishing America for all its choices against Israel and the Jewish people, especially in recent years.

This book, and the events I’m reading about in the news, and the biblical prophecy I follow, all remind me that God is still the same God He was in the Old Testament.

His power and majesty are on display for the world to see. He loves those who love Him and blesses those who bless His people.

Star Spangled Banner – The Fourth Verse

I decided to share this video because for me it embodies and reminds me of the foundation of the United States of America.

It was a solidly Christian foundation (don’t get me started on revisionist history!) with solid Christian leaders. Even those who weren’t Christian held to strong biblical principles.

And so I bring you today the national anthem for the USA. But instead of the verse you hear at every sports event and celebration, today you will hear ‘the rest of the story’.

This is verse four of the American Anthem.

Enjoy. And while you do, pray that the USA will as a nation turn their hearts back toward God. Pray that they will choose again to honor God by blessing Israel. Pray that they will be revived spiritually, economically and in every way.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

  1. Excellent post, Carla. Great way to start my 4th of July!

By the way, this isn’t the first time I haven’t been able to watch the video within the email format. When I clicked to comment and was taken to the website, then I could hit play on the video, which was so worth watching.

    Happy Independence Day!!!

    • Carla Anne says:

Jennifer, most times the email format will not support watching videos in it. We don’t have a solution for that at the moment, so you need to watch them on the website. So… it’s working as expected I guess! :) Happy Independence Day!!!

      • Maybe you could put a link in there to direct people to the website to see the video. Just a thought. I bet most people just assume its not working and don’t bother trying the website. I only stumbled upon it when I hit the comment link.

  2. Thank you for sharing! I too am so saddened our country has turned away from its strong Christian roots, but very proud for living and serving in a country that has stood beside Israel and is still rooted in the Bible (because as hard as they try we still have In God We Trust everywhere :) )
